PURPOSE

Through its annual Design Awards Program, AIA Chesapeake Bay Chapter recognizes excellence in architecture throughout the Chesapeake Bay Region. The program promotes the value of good design and encourages members to pursue excellence through their work and through service to the public.

ELIGIBILITY

The Awards Program is open to all AIA Chesapeake Bay Chapter Members. The AIACBC member submitting must be a member of the design team responsible for the project, or a principal of the firm that is responsible for the project. New structures, additions, and projects involving significant changes to existing buildings, regardless of location, whose construction was completed after January 1, 2004, may be submitted. Projects that have previously won an AIACBC award are ineligible.

Non-AIACBC member architects and firms from neighboring AIA Chapters are ineligible to enter. As a chapter we are trying to promote the architecture and design of the architects in our chapter's boundaries.

AWARDS

Three levels of award shall be given: Honor, Merit, and Citation, of which Honor is the highest distinction. No minimum or maximum number of awards will be required of the jury. Each project will be considered on its own merit. Therefore, projects will not be considered in the limited context of the Chesapeake Bay region but rather within the context of present day design values and the ideals that have shaped the definition of “good” design throughout the years. As always, a universe of design issues will inform the jury process. Issues such as innovation, form, construction methods, utility, response to surrounding site conditions, and / or an appreciation of the project's environmental impact are all likely to be considered for each project.

FOCUS ON COLLABORATION

Architecture is a collaborative effort. The success of a project is seldom attributable to one individual or even one firm. Award Winning Designs are always the result of a successful team effort. Each year, the AIACBC Design Awards Program recognizes its member Architects whose hard work, technical expertise, and creative efforts result in successful, award-worthy architectural projects.

With all due respect to the architect's fundamental role in the success of any project, this year the AIACBC wishes to also acknowledge those consultants, builders, owners or other key project personnel whose efforts were essential to the success of the award winning projects. Perhaps the project benefitted greatly from the efforts of an innovative Structural Engineer or a Builder willing to go that extra mile or an Owner whose cooperation and vision were the renewable energy that kept the project going despite setbacks along the way. Whatever the case may be, AIACBC is asking each of its architect members who receive awards this year to share that recognition with at least one other key member of the project team outside the firm. Architect members are encouraged to invite that project team member, or members, to the Design Gala where they will receive a certificate in recognition of their superior effort in the success of the project.

JURY

For 2009, the Board of Directors has approved a jury of its peers from the AIA Central Pennsylvania Chapter (AIACP) based in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. AIACBC will conduct a jury for AIACP in October of this year. AIACP has agreed to reciprocate that effort by assembling a jury to review our submissions this fall. The Board of Directors sincerely appreciates this cooperative effort with AIACP and will seek similar mutually beneficial relationships with other AIA Chapters in the future.

SUBMISSION DEADLINE

Submissions must be received at the AIA Chesapeake Bay Chapter House between the hours of 9:00 am and 3:00 pm on Friday, September 18, 2009. No late submissions shall be permitted under any circumstances. Submit materials to:

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

For 2009, Chesapeake Home has again agreed to sponsor our Chapter's Awards Program. As in the past, Chesapeake Home will publish the winners of the Awards Program. This arrangement does not preclude projects being submitted for publication in other media. ChesapeakeHome is providing media coverage of the Awards Program and the winners as a single event and topic.

The 2009 Chesapeake Bay Chapter Design Awards Gala will be held at Quietwaters Park in Annapolis on Saturday, December 5, 2009. Details on the time and exact location of the event will be announced at a later date. Please check the AIACBC website in the coming weeks for additional information.

Winners of 2009 Design Awards will be notified prior to the Design Gala. This is an important change in the format of this year's Design Awards Program. In this way, those receiving recognition will be able to invite Owners, Builders, or other interested parties to attend the Gala and share in the honor of being selected as an award recipient.

It is the responsibility of the architect to describe completely the project's problem and solution. All significant exterior and / or interior views shall be included, as well as plans and elevations. Each entry must be submitted on 36” x 36” Presentation Boards. Firms or individuals in joint ventures or other cooperative endeavors must coordinate efforts to produce a single entry for a given project. The jury will not consider any entry that does not conform to all requirements set forth in the Call for Entries. Use the checklist provided to assist in the completion of your submission requirements.
