AIACBC Design Awards Program


Through its annual Design Awards Program, AIA Chesapeake Bay Chapter recognizes excellence in architecture throughout the Chesapeake Bay Region.   The purpose of the awards program is to encourage and recognize distinguished architectural achievement and to honor the architects, clients, and consultants who work together to improve the built environment and for their role in shaping the quality of life through design excellence.

2017 AIA CBC Design Awards – Call for Entries

AIA Chesapeake Bay is now accepting Design Awards submissions for 2017. Both payment and submission will be handled simultaneously through one secure awards submission portal. There is only ONE DEADLINE for both payment and submission.


The Awards Program is open to AIA Chesapeake Bay Chapter Members for projects located anywhere in the world.  For a project to be considered eligible for an award, the sole proprietor or principal of the submitting firm must be an assigned AIA/CBC member.  New structures, additions, and projects involving significant changes to existing buildings, regardless of location, whose construction was completed after January 1, 2012, may be submitted.  Projects that have previously won an AIACBC award are ineligible.  However, a project which had ONLY won a People’s Choice Award at a previous event is eligible for re-submission.

In addition, any AIA member architect located outside of the CBC area who wishes to submit a project may do so as long as the project location itself is within the CBC area (Anne Arundel, Calvert, St. Mary’s, Kent, Queen Anne’s, Talbot, Caroline, Dorchester, Wicomico, Worcester, and Somerset counties).


  • Submission & Payment Deadline:  11:59 PM on Friday, September 8, 2017  Submission Forms, Material Uploads and Entry Fees are due by 11:59pm EDT.  Entry fee payments may be made by credit card in the awards submission portal when the project is ready for final submission. Check payments, payable to AIA Chesapeake Bay, must be received at the AIA Chesapeake Bay Office (86 Maryland Ave., Annapolis, MD 21401) by the submission deadline, September 8.

  • Design Awards Gala: Friday, November 10, 2017, 6-9 PM   Tavern Ballroom at Chesapeake Bay Beach Club, Stevensville, MD


Entry fee is $150 per project. Multiple projects can be submitted, each at $150.  Payment is required at time of submission.  There is no separate deadline for payment and project submission. Registration fees are non-refundable; however, upon request fees may be deferred to the following year’s program.

Awards & Judging

The Board of Directors is currently in the process of selecting a jury of peers.  Three levels of awards shall be given: Honor, Merit, and Citation, of which Honor is the highest distinction.  No minimum or maximum number of awards will be required of the jury.  Each project will be considered on its own merit.  Therefore, projects will not be considered in the limited context of the Chesapeake Bay region but rather within the context of present day design values and the ideals that have shaped the definition of “good” design throughout the years.  As always, a host of design issues will inform the jury process.  Issues such as innovation, form, construction, utility, response to context and/or an appreciation of the project’s environmental impact are some of the factors likely to be considered for each project.

Winning Entries

Winners of 2017 Design Awards will be notified prior to the Design Gala in order for winner to make arrangements with parties involved with the project to attend the Gala should they wish to.  We encourage those receiving recognition to invite project team members as well as owners, consultants, contractors and other interested parties to attend the Gala and share in the honor of being selected as an award recipient.  Notification will indicate that the project/firm will be receiving an award but will NOT indicate the award level prior to the event. Winners will be asked to provide a 36″x36″ board with project photos and description as outlined in instructions to be sent when winners are notified. This board will become part of an exhibit to be displayed at the Awards Gala, as well as in the AIA Maryland Chapter House and other public locations throughout the year. After one year, the entrant will have the opportunity to take ownership of the board.

The 2017 Chesapeake Bay Chapter Design Awards Gala will be held on Friday, November 10, 2017, at the Tavern Ballroom at Chesapeake Bay Beach Club, 500 Pier One Road, Stevensville, MD, 21666.  Please check the AIA/CBC website in the future for additional information and sponsorship opportunities.
